AS Saint-Étienne failed to achieve its goal of directly promoting to Ligue 1 this season. After a season where two coaches have sat on the Stéphanois bench, we compare their statistical records. AS Saint-Étienne had a good start to the season, conceding its first defeat in the eighth round against Guingamp (2-3). The rest of the season was more complicated for Eirik Horneland's men, with completely irregular performances. Sometimes good like against Pau (6-0) or against Troyes (2-3), sometimes bad like against Red Star (2-1) or Le Mans (2-3) or even catastrophic like against Annecy (4-0). At the winter break, even the great strength of this AS Saint-Étienne version Horneland, the attack, was in crisis with only one goal scored in the four Ligue 2 matches played in January. It was too much for the Stéphanois management, who decided to part ways with the Norwegian before the match against Boulogne-sur-Mer, which he still managed to lose for his eighth defeat of the season in Ligue 2 (0-1). Upon his arrival, Philippe Montanier revolutionized ASSE. The high-pressing tactic promoted by Horneland was abandoned, and a more pragmatic Saint-Étienne was adopted. And it worked: five consecutive victories, nine games without defeat. However, everything fell apart at the start of the final sprint with an inexplicable defeat against the last-placed Bastia (2-0), followed by two other reversals that pushed ASSE to go through the play-off 2, won painfully in a penalty shootout, and the playoffs against Nice, which were fatal to the Greens (4-1 in the return match after a goalless and scoreless draw in the first leg).
